CAMINOSOFT ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF INNOVATIVE MEDICAL ENTERPRISE DOCUMENT AND IMAGE STORAGE, ARCHIVING AND RETRIEVAL SYSTEM

June 11, 2003
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 11, 2003-- CaminoSoft Corp. CMSFleading provider of Storage Management and High Availability solutions, today announced the introduction of MEDISTARTM, the company's Medical Enterprise Document and Image Storage, Archiving, and Retrieval System.

CaminoSoft's MEDISTAR System offers healthcare providers and medical imaging facilities a cost-effective way to retain digital images and documents online, then automatically migrate infrequently accessed files to nearline and/or offline storage.

According to Steve Crosson, chief executive officer at CaminoSoft, "Because of the substantial amount of storage needed to retain all images online -- measured weekly in gigabytes (GB) and annually in terabytes (TB) -- managers of hospitals and radiology centers are constrained by their PACS equipment to provide image access for a few days and then have to output the images to film for archiving in an offsite location."

Crosson continued, "Expanding the storage of PACS equipment does not address the fact that the subsequent recall of files typically diminishes rapidly over time. Further, the attendant costs of using and maintaining film and the slow response time when record access is required (typically hours) can adversely affect patient care and treatment. MEDISTAR's value propositions address these important operational issues. For those hospitals which do not have a PACS System, the MEDISTAR solution provides them with an immediate return of investment by allowing the capture, storage and retrieval of DICOM compatible images directly from the modalities (e.g., CT, RF, MR, Ultrasound, etc.)."

MEDISTAR has been developed by CaminoSoft with the proof of concept and testing performed at Mission Community Hospital, a newly built 150 bed acute care facility in Panorama City, Calif. Currently installed in a pilot configuration at Mission Community Hospital, MEDISTAR offers these key advantages:

  • Integrates with existing or newly acquired PACS resources and works seamlessly in PACS-less environments directly with the digital modalities to capture, store, and archive image data
  • Associates patient image and document Electronic Medical Records (EMRs): radiology, admissions information, patient insurance card, medication orders, lab work, other scanned images and results, and physician-annotated text notes
  • Maintains all relevant files online---at least one year or longer, if required---and automatically migrating infrequently accessed data to nearline and offline storage per system administrator-defined policies
  • Searches and rapidly locates specific patient records in nearline and/or offline storage without demigrating data back to online storage resources until files are "opened"
  • Retrieves requested files from nearline storage in virtual realtime (typically seconds) and from offline storage in the time needed to load media into an autochanger (typically minutes)
  • Reduces operational costs, including film materials and labor associated with managing, retrieving, and inventorying film, while improving healthcare delivery, performance, and efficiency

Andre Henderson, director of information systems at Mission Community Hospital, stated: "MEDISTAR has provided our facility with a uniform, cost-effective architecture for storing and managing our files digitally, including radiology images, scanned photographs, documents, and email archives. The system is scaleable and easy to install and maintain. Our annual film expenditure alone was more than enough to justify the ROI. With the elimination of printing and archiving film, now our director of radiology and physicians have online access to all images."

"We were always intimidated by high-priced PACS solutions and therefore never planned for their acquisition," said Bill Daniel, chief executive officer at Mission Community Hospital. "However, after watching the demonstration of CaminoSoft's pilot MEDISTAR System at our hospital, I am looking forward to its full deployment. This will enable us to have more of the required and appropriate information available online for our care personnel and medical staff. The reduction in film costs alone more than pays for this solution, and we expect to realize substantially improved services relative to access of patient information, specifically in operations and provision of care."

According to Matt Charms, MD, of Tower Imaging Medical Group in Los Angeles, Calif., (and Tower Imaging's Medical Director for Imaging at Mission Community Hospital), "I was quite impressed with the demonstration of the CaminoSoft MEDISTAR pilot at Mission Community Hospital. I expect that the production system will substantially improve the availability of image viewing through its online access for physicians while eliminating the need to print and store films."
